How do I install software on an MSU Denver Mac computer using Self Service?

Overview

Not to be confused with Self Service BannerJAMF Self Service is a feature included on all MSU Denver-managed Apple devices that allow users to install, update, and uninstall pre-approved applications without requiring ITS support or intervention. This article will walk you through installing software through this tool.

How to Access Self Service

  1. Open Spotlight Search.

    Note: If you do not have the app installed on your MSU Denver computer, please contact the ITS Service Desk.

  2. Search the term Self Service and open the Self Service app. (The app as an MSU Denver logo.)

How to Install a Software Application

  1. In Self Service, use the search bar to look for your desired app (you can also scroll through the list to locate it).

    Note: The software listed in your Self Service may not match the above software list. 
     
  2. Search for the name of the app you want to install in the search field (you can also scroll through the list to locate it).
    Once you've found the app you're looking for, click the Install button.

  3. Observe installation progress bars and notification settings,  as the application installation completes.

How to Install an OS version upgrade

Major version upgrades to MacOS are installed via Self Service when you are ready to do upgrade. ITS recommends upgrading your device to the latest major version available in Self Service. Please note that the latest operation system version available in Self Service may lag behind the latest version available by Apple, per our internal release schedule. 1. Search the name of the OS version you want to install or the term Updates in the Self Service search field.  You may also navigate to the Updates heading in the left-hand navigation menu. The OS version available for upgrade will show the Install button under their icon.

Note:  If your Mac is already has the latest version available to MSU Denver, the icon will show Reinstall. No upgrade action is needed on you device.


2. Recommended:  Before starting an OS upgrade, back up any local data that is important to you. If you need assistance using OneDrive for Business, please contact our service desk or submit a request for help here: One Drive for Business - Get Support

3. Prepare to start the upgrade which can take up to 60-90 minutes to complete. Your device will reboot in this process and won't be usable as the upgrade installs.​​​​​​
    a.  If you are on a laptop, connect your laptop to a power adapter / docking station.
    
b.  Click the Install button under the operating system app in Self Service to start the upgrade.
    c.  Enter your login credentials to authorize the install when prompted.
    d.  Observe progress bars and notifications. Do not interrupt the upgrade or disconnect your device from its power source.

Result

You have successfully started the installation of your desired software. Note that different apps will have different installation times, and some may require you restart your computer. You can continue to use your computer while the installation runs.
