How do I update a cloud security group?

Body

Overview

This article is for department office managers, lab coordinators or program assistants that have been designated as an owner of a security group in Microsoft Entra ID (formerly known as Azure AD). Cloud security groups can be used to grant access to certain applications, printers or cloud services.

Before you begin...

Be sure you meet the following requirements:

  • You are NOT attempting to update a printer access group. If you are, please see How do I manage a printer access group? as it contains important instructions specific to printers.
  • You know the name of your group. This is given to you by ITS when your group is created. When in doubt, check with ITS.
  • Your group is cloud managed. If you own an on-premise security group see How do I update an on-premise security group?. When in doubt, check with ITS.
  • You are the owner of this group. There can be multiple group owners. If ownership needs to be changed, see below.
  • Remember that changes to membership may take time to sync depending on the service managed by your group.
  • Remember that owners need to be members of the group as well in order to gain access to the services managed by your group.
