How do I update an on-premise security group?

Overview

This article is for department office managers, lab coordinators or program assistants that have been designated as an owner of a security group in Active Directory. On-premise security groups can be used to grant access to certain applications, files or network shares.

Before you begin...

Be sure you meet the following requirements:

  • You are NOT attempting to update a printer access group. If you are, please see How do I manage a printer access group? as it contains important instructions specific to printers.
  • You are using a Windows computer. This process cannot be done on Macs, but the tasks can be performed from any MSU Denver networked Windows computer (e.g. a front desk or lab machine).
  • Your computer is connected to the campus network with an Ethernet cable, docking station or GlobalProtect.
  • You know the name of your group. This is given to you by ITS when your group is created. When in doubt, check with ITS.
  • Your group is hosted on-premisesIf you own an cloud-hosted security group see How do I update a cloud security group?. When in doubt, check with ITS.
  • You are the owner of this group. There can be multiple group owners. If ownership needs to be changed, see below.
  • Remember that changes to membership may take time to sync depending on the service managed by your group.
