How do I add other users to my Canvas course?

Overview

This article will show you how to add a student or another instructor into your Canvas course. 

Please note: You can only add users to your course that have an active MSU Denver email account. Adding users manually to Canvas courses does not count as actually registering them for a course. All Instructors and Students that need to be officially registered for a course should be added through the Registrars office. 

Before you begin...

Log in to Canvas, and navigate to the course you want to add the user to. 

Instructions

  • Click People from the course navigation menu on the left side of the page.
  • Click +People in the top-right corner.
  • In the pop-up window that appears, type the user's email address into the text box provided (netid@msudenver.edu). You can add multiple users at once by putting a comma between each user.
  • Select the user's intended role from the drop down menu.
  • Once you have selected roles, click the Next button to proceed. 
  • Canvas will verify if the account(s) are valid. If valid, you will see the following message in green: "The following users are ready to be added to the course."
  • Click the Add Users button to add the desired user(s) to your course.

Canvas will automatically send an invitation to participate in the course to any users added this way. The user's status will display as pending in your user list until they accept the invitation.

Please note: If the course you are trying to add someone into has been closed then you may find that the +People option is greyed out and does not work. If this is the case you will need to open up the course to add the individual and then re-close the course after they are added. Please see the exact steps listed below:

How to Change Course Settings To Add People If Course is Closed

  • Navigate to the course
  • Click Settings from the course navigation menu on the left side of the page.
  • Under the Participation section on the Setting page remove or change the End date to a current/future date.
  • Click Update Course Details at the bottom of the Settings page.
  • When the course has been updated then go through steps to add users to the course
  • After users have been successfully added return to the Settings page. 
  • Change the End Date back to it’s previous date to close the course.
  • Click Update Course Details again to save the changes.

Result

Once the added user accepts the invitation, they will be able to access your course's content according to the assigned role.
