How do I open .lis files from Banner reports on Mac?

Overview

When you run a report in Banner, the output is provided in a .lis file. While these can be viewed on both Windows or Mac computers, you may receive an error on a Mac if no default program to view or edit .lis files with has been set. You can fix this by taking the steps below.

Before you begin...

  • Power on your Mac.
  • Have a .lis file available (e.g. run a Banner report and download the output file).
  • Open Finder and locate your .lis file.

Instructions

  1. Right-click the .lis file within Finder.
  2. Click Get Info.
  3. In the next menu, click the arrow to the left of "Open With:"
  4. Click Other...
  5. In the window that opens, in the sidebar, click Applications.
  6. Click TextEdit (you may need to scroll through the list to find it, depending on how many applications you have installed).
  7. Click Add.
  8. Verify that TextEdit now shows up in the dropdown box under "Open With:"
  9. Click Change All...
  10. In the confirmation window that appears, click Continue.

Result

Open your .lis file to verify that you can now read it in TextEdit.
