How do I export my class roster?

Overview

This article will show you how to export your class roster from your Canvas course as a CSV file using the Gradebook section of the course. This will allow you to keep a copy of your course grades and roster (including contact information) on your computer.

Please Note: This list may be up to an hour out of date from Banner data, which is refreshed hourly.

Before you begin...

Log in to Canvas, and navigate to the course you want to export the class roster from. 

Instructions

  1. Click Grades on the navigation menu on the left side of the page.
  2. Click Actions.
  3. Click Export.
    • A green outlined confirmation message will appear at the top of the page to indicate the download is starting.
  4. Open File for downloads on your computer to view the downloaded CSV file.
    • A .CSV file is a type of spreadsheet and can be opened by any spreadsheet editing software, such as Microsoft Excel. If double-clicking on the .CSV file does not open it in the software you would like to use, right-click (or control click for Mac) on the file and click Open With. Then select Excel or some other program from the list provided.

Result

You now have a copy of the current gradebook for your course, as well as a class roster. If you wish to email all the enrolled students, you will utilize the SIS Login ID column of the CSV you exported. 

If you are using a Mac:

  1. Highlight the column of emails (called SIS Login ID
  2. Click the copy button (under the Home tab) or use the key command Command+C
  3. Compose a new email message in Outlook (either the application, or through the web) 
  4. Click in the To field and paste the copied clipboard content into the box, either via the key command Command+V or by selecting Paste from the Edit drop-down

If you are using a Windows PC:

  1. Highlight the column of emails (called SIS Login ID

  3. Compose a new email message in Outlook (either the application, or through the web) 
  4. Click in the To field and paste the copied clipboard content into the box, either via the key command Control+V or by selecting Paste from the Edit drop-down
