How do I add a backup phone number for MFA?

ITS encourages listing an alternate phone number or registering the mobile app on a second device (e.g. tablet) so you have a backup authenticator available if something happens to your primary device. You can update these settings at any time as your phone numbers or devices change.

Before you begin...

You must know your MSU Denver email credentials in order to add a backup phone number.

  1. Log in to your MSU Denver email account through a web browser.
  2. Click the bubble in the top-right corner of the window where either your picture or your initials are displayed, then choose View Account.

Appearance of the account settings drop dwon

3. On the next page, find the Security info panel and select Update info

Appearance of the Office 365 Security Info option

4. Approve a 2-factor authentication challenge on your authentication device, if prompted.

4. On the next screen, click change next to Alternate authentication phone.

5. Select your country code, then type your 10-digit phone number.

6. Click Save to submit your changes.

You will have an alternative way of verifying Microsoft Authenticator if you are unable to verify through the MFA app or receive phone calls to your original phone number provided.
