How do I temporarily elevate to admin on a macOS device?

Overview

MSU Denver allows for temporary privilege escalation via a menu bar application. This article will walk you through the steps of how to temporarily elevate your local macOS account to an Administrator.

Before you begin...

Access can be only be granted if approved by the Security team; access can be requested by filling out the Elevated rights request form.

If you have been approved for Temporary Admin access you will see a Lock icon 🔒 in the Menu Bar of your macOS device, if you have been approved and do not see the Lock icon then please reach out the ITS Service Desk (303)352-7548 Option 4.

Instructions

  1. Click the lock icon ðŸ”’ in the Menu Bar along the top of the screen on your macOS device.

  1. Select Request Privileges

  1. Perform Touch ID or enter your password.

  1. Your account on the Mac will now be an Administrator for the next 5 minutes. The lock icon ðŸ”’will change to an unlock icon 🔓 with a timer counting down.

  1. Once you have completed the tasks that required admin privileges, you should end the timer early by clicking the unlock icon with timer 🔓 and selecting Revert Privileges. Once the timer has run out, your account will automatically be reverted to a Standard User.

Result

You have now temporarily elevated to an Administrator for 5 minutes.
